!-! Desitarka.org !-! The Last Exorcism (15) {REVIEW & PHOTOS}

YOU know when a cheery young teenage girl's eyes roll back in her head, her neck cracks 90 degrees sideways, and she starts croaking about how she's the mindless flesh puppet of Abalam, King of Hell?

Brrr. There's just something about it that creeps me out a wee bit.

The Last Exorcism is a superb horror movie, shot like a fly-on-the-wall documentary, that follows a preacher as he tries to debunk exorcism as a con-trick.

See if you can guess how that works out for him.

Patrick Fabian is the old-fashioned American showman minister, the Rev Cotton Marcus. He's also an exorcist, and he's got a hefty, leather-bound I-Spy: Satan's Minions book to prove it.

But his exorcisms are frauds, with beds rocked by fishing lines and sound effects from hidden speakers.

After years of well-intentioned deception, he decides to expose the scam in the interest of honesty. So he selects a family's letter at random from his in-tray, and sets out to cast out their demon, camera crew in tow.

The letter is from Louisiana farmer Louis Sweetzer (Louis Herthum), whose cows keep getting stabbed in the night.

The dad of two blames his daughter Nell (Ashley Bell) but Cotton doesn't think such an innocent young lass could be capable of such brutality.

For pity's sake. Have you never seen an exorcism film before?

What follows is a masterclass in merciless, gut-twisting terror. But The Last Exorcism also knows when to hold back.

And after the shock ending - which I loved but others possibly won't - the facts of the plot are up for debate.

Supremely unnerving, sharply written and brilliantly paced - right down to the positioning of occasional gags to allow viewers to let off steam - The Last Exorcism could end up being this year's best proper horror film.
