Cigars Make Me Healthy

Cigars Make Me Healthy

Winston Churchill is carried into his London home after a car accident in the U.S., in October 1932. Churchill's father smoked cigarettes, but Winston detested them. When offered a cigarette by a valet who disliked cigars, Churchill responded, "Too many of those will kill you."

Churchill looks at enemy positions from a fortified forward position in Italy in 1944. "It took me a little while to get used to the fact that in two days his cigar consumption was the equivalent of my weekly salary," his valet Roy Howells wrote later.

Churchill sits at his desk at Chartwell Manor, his country home in Kent, in 1929. He kept between 3,000 and 4,000 cigars in a room next to his study, on shelves marked "large," "small," "wrapped," and "naked."

Churchill waves to crowds gathered in Whitehall on VE Day, May 8, 1945. His favorite cigars were Cuban: Romeo y Julieta and La Aroma de Cuba. The latter is no longer made.

Churchill began smoking cigars in 1895 in Cuba, where he had arrived just before his 21st birthday to find glory on the battlefield in the fight between the Spanish government and Cuban rebels.

Temporarily out of government, Churchill smokes a cigar at his desk in 1947. In his later years, his Chartwell staff saved his cigar stubs and gave them to a gardener, who smoked the remnants in his pipe.

Churchill and his wife, Clementine, visit an antiaircraft battery manned by both men and women on April 10, 1942. When he traveled, Churchill always carried his favorite ashtray with him, silver and shaped like a pagoda.

Greeting Dignitaries With Smoke

Churchill greets Adesoji Aderemi, the king of Nigeria, in 1953. During a trip abroad during World War II, Churchill was told the Saudi king's religion forbade smoking or alcohol in his presence. Churchill responded that his "rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after and, if need be, during all meals and in the intervals between them." That convinced the king to make an exception to his rule.

Churchill offers up an unintentional lesson in fire safety by smoking a cigar while touching up one of his landscapes in 1944. Churchill was notorious for burning his clothes while smoking. His wife even designed a bib for him to wear in bed so he wouldn't ruin his silk pajamas.

Two Famous Smokers

Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt pose next to a convertible while in Quebec to discuss the war in 1943. FDR was almost as famous for his cigarette holder as Churchill was for his cigars. The vision of a jaunty, grinning Roosevelt with his cigarette tipped optimistically upward was a familiar image to Americans during the 1930s and 1940s.

Churchill inspects a chair once used by Adolf Hitler during a tour of the ruins of the Chancellory in Berlin in 1945. Both Hitler and Mussolini, he no doubt noted, were strict nonsmokers.

The hero of El Alamein—a critical Allied victory in North Africa—Field Marshal Viscount Bernard Montgomery greets Churchill at a 1951 Alamein reunion in London. "[Churchill] is an exceedingly kind and generous host, providing unlimited Champagne, cigars, and brandy," a guest to Chartwell noted.
