Superman rescues family home: Cash-strapped couple faced repossession... then they find rare comic in the basement

It sounds like the stuff of fiction: a family whose home was due to be repossessed find a rare and valuable comic in the basement.

However, it was reality for one American couple who discovered a the very first edition of Action Comics featuring Superman as they were packing up their belongings.

The husband and wife - who wish to remain anonymous but who are from the country's south - were devastated when they could not meet the repayments on their property.

But they struck gold when the came across a stash of 'old magazines' and 'old comic books', including the first comic in which Superman appears, dated June 1938.

It could sell for $250,000 (£160,000).

Vincent Zurzolo, co-owner of New York's ComicConnect, who the couple contacted to see what they could pawn, told ABC News: 'This family was in tears.

'The family home was going to be lost and they're devastated.

'They can't figure out a way out of this.

'They go into the basement and start sifting through boxes – trying to find packing boxes – and they stumble on eight or nine comic books.'

Most of the other comics have been valued at between £3-£6. However, the couple's copy of the rare comic has received a 'very good' status with 5/10 points and could save their home.

They released a statement through ComicConnect, which is auctioning the comic from August 27 to September 17, saying they were still a 'little shell shocked'.

The owner added: 'I was so nervous when I realised what it was worth.

'I know I am very fortunate but I will be greatly relieved when this book finds a new home.'

In March ComicConnect owners Zurzolo and Stephen Fishler sold two Action Comics #1 – one for a recording-breaking £940,000 in March, preceded by £630,000 in February.
