Helping Hand
A woman is helped over a flood barrier in the village of Appleby, northern England. Politician Tony Cunningham said the flooding was "of biblical proportions" and on a scale seen "once every 1,000 years."

Wave of Tragedy
Waves crash over the harbor in Porthcawl, Wales. Up in Cumbria, England, the body of a man found after a bridge collapsed over a flooded river has been named as policeman Bill Barker. He was directing motorists off the bridge when it caved in. Prime Minister Gordon Brown described him as a "very heroic, very brave man."

Fit for Bursting
The torrential rain on Cockermouth High Street caused rivers to burst their banks. Prime Minister Brown said, "It has been the worst rainfall according to records that we've seen in Britain at any time since records began and these last 36 hours have been particularly difficult for the people of Cockermouth and other people in the Cumbria area."





Defenses Down
A woman is taken to safety in a dinghy in Cockermouth. Environment Secretary, Hilary Benn, who visited the area to assess the flooding, said that the defenses which had been built to withstand the "one in 100 years flood" were simply unable to cope with the sheer volume of water.

Hands to the Pump
A firefighter attempts to rescue people from rising flood waters in Keswick in England's Lake District. Keswick's Mayor, Andrew Lysser, said: "It is all hands to the pump, really."

Closed for Business
A man views the devastation from his shop in the Whitesands area of Dumfries, Scotland. Whitesands is usually flooded about twice a year but according to many locals and emergency officials, this is the worst seen since the early 1980s.

The BBC's Laura Bicker, in Cockermouth:

Cockermouth High Street looks more like a rapidly flowing river at the moment.

Shops that had just done up their fronts for Christmas are now only accessible by boat.

The RNLI, the fire service, mountain rescue and the police are all here working together to try to evacuate people from their houses.

Overhead, there's a helicopter from the RAF taking people off the roofs of their houses and from windows.
