HOW TO MAKE YOUR MARRIAGE SWEETER I'm not an authority on marriage, but many times people ask me the secret of sixty years of marriage. While the credit for a strong marriage that grows in love and gets sweeter every year belongs to the Lord, there are certain things that you can do to help make this a reality. I once heard a pastor recommend to a couple who were having problems with their marriage that they should read the love chapter in the Bible (1 Corinthians 13) every night together for a month. I understand that before the end of the month they were able to end their differences and truly love each other.   You should never criticize your mate to your children or to anyone else. Let him/her know that you are loyal, and will always stand up for and protect his/her good name. The more you dwell on a fault, the larger it will become. Make a list of all the good things you like about your mate. Praise him/her and thank him/her for these good qualities. Make your mate feel important. When he/she knows the things you especially appreciate and admire, he/she will try harder to be the person you admire, and do the things you love.   Be generous with your hugs, and remember that you can never say "I love you" too often. It will never get old to your lover's ears.  Try to think of thoughtful things you can do for your mate. Hide a little love note – "I love you because…" somewhere where he/she can find it. Dwell on the good and positive things.  Use your imagination to make your marriage exciting, and don't just settle into a rut and stay there.   Freely help your mate with his/her projects and you will find he/she will help you with the things you want to do. Keep the lines of communication open. Try to talk things over without getting angry.  Express how you feel, and listen to the way your mate feels. Don't be afraid to compromise.  Try not to go to bed in anger, and try to watch the things you say. Sometimes angry words can cause lasting hurt. Make it an ironclad rule to always be honest and never lie to your mate. It is very important to be able to trust each other. Try to change the things in yourself that might be annoying to your mate. Stay lovable. Pray for your mate, and for the Lord's protection on your marriage. Teach your children to love and respect him/her. Thank the Lord for giving you someone to love and with whom you can share your life.  The closer you draw to the Lord, the closer you can draw to your mate, and the sweeter your marriage can become.
