Thomas Brooks          THOUGHT One of Paul's faithful coworkers in his missionary travels throughout the Roman Empire was Titus. Paul left Titus on the island of Crete to encourage and establish order in the churches there (1:5). He instructed Titus by repeating his common theme that salvation is not a matter of works but God's kindness: "But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy" (3:4–5). But in verse 14 he appeals to an image from farming. Fruitfulness does not happen unless seeds of good works and acts of love are planted: "Our people must learn to devote themselves to doing what is good, in order that they may provide for daily necessities and not live unproductive lives" (3:14). Before you know it, your fruitfulness will be in measure with the seeds of love and obedience you've planted. What seeds will you plant today?
